The National Park Service announced that peak bloom for the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin and National Mall is projected to occur between March 29 and April 1, depending on weather conditions.
Once peak bloom begins, the blossoms typically remain on the trees for seven to ten days. The annual spring tradition dates back to 1912, when Japan gifted 3,000 cherry trees to Washington, D.C., and it now draws millions of visitors each year.
Officials also highlighted ongoing restoration work at the Tidal Basin and West Potomac Park seawall, a $113 million project aimed at addressing flooding, sinking ground and aging infrastructure while protecting the cherry trees and nearby memorials. Some walkways between the Jefferson Memorial and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial will remain closed during the bloom period to protect newly restored areas, though alternate routes will remain available for visitors.
