Montgomery County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is promoting its “Keep It Clean, Montgomery” Earth Month campaign to raise awareness about litter and its environmental impact.
The campaign will appear on Ride On and WMATA buses, online, and on social media, emphasizing how litter accumulates, travels through storm drains, and affects local waterways. In Fiscal Year 2025, volunteers and County crews collected nearly 54 tons of litter, highlighting both cleanup efforts and the continued presence of trash in the community.
DEP is encouraging residents to take simple actions such as securing trash, reducing waste, volunteering, and reporting litter through 311. As part of the effort, a spring cleanup event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at 9 am in Silver Spring, with volunteers meeting at the corner of Oakview Drive and East Light Drive. Cleanup supplies will be provided, students can earn SSL hours, and registration is encouraged to ensure enough materials are available.
