Leaders Celebrate $353M Samsung Biologics Facility Opening in Rockville

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich joined state and local officials, including Governor Wes Moore and industry leaders, to mark the opening of Samsung Biologics’ first U.S. manufacturing facility in Rockville.

The project involves a $353 million acquisition of a former GSK manufacturing campus and retains more than 500 local jobs while adding new biomanufacturing capacity.

Samsung Biologics, a South Korea-based biotechnology company, will operate two manufacturing plants at the site to support both clinical and commercial production of biologic drugs. The facility increases the company’s global production capacity and is expected to serve as a foundation for future expansion, including potential technology upgrades and additional investment.

Officials highlighted the project as part of Montgomery County’s broader role in the region’s life sciences sector, which includes proximity to federal agencies, research institutions, and a skilled workforce. Leaders noted that the facility strengthens the county’s position within a major biohealth hub and reflects continued investment from international companies in the area.

The opening also builds on ongoing economic development efforts in Maryland, particularly within the I-270 Technology Corridor, where public and private partnerships continue to support growth in biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing. State and local leaders said the project is expected to contribute to job retention, innovation, and long-term economic activity in the region.
