Montgomery County Council Approves Bill to Ease Regulations for Farmers

The Montgomery County Council unanimously approved Bill 7-26, legislation introduced by Natali Fani-González, Marilyn Balcombe, and Dawn Luedtke to reduce regulatory burdens on agricultural operators.

The measure clarifies that agricultural uses include business, administrative, and product processing activities, allowing certain farm-related structures to qualify for permitting exemptions rather than undergoing full commercial building review.

The legislation responds to concerns from farmers who were required to meet commercial permitting standards for routine agricultural operations and aligns the County’s building code with its zoning code to provide greater consistency. Officials say the changes are intended to streamline approvals, reduce uncertainty, and support the long-term viability of agriculture in Montgomery County.
