$2.1 Million in Funding Awarded to Montgomery County for Climate Initiatives

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been awarded more than $2.1 million in federal and state funding to support programs aimed at lowering energy costs for low and moderate-income residents and expanding the County’s tree canopy.

The funding includes more than $1.6 million secured by Maryland’s federal delegation and an additional $500,000 from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

A portion of the funding will support the Healthy, Efficient, Electrified, Climate-Adapted Pilot (HEECAP) Homes Grants Program, which provides resources to help repair and upgrade homes so residents can access energy efficiency and weatherization services. Officials say the program is designed to reduce energy burdens, improve indoor air quality, and increase climate resilience, with nonprofit partners able to apply for funding through April 22 .

Additional funding will be used for tree planting and reforestation efforts through programs such as Tree Montgomery, including planting and maintaining thousands of trees across the County. County leaders say the investments are intended to improve environmental conditions, enhance biodiversity, and support long-term sustainability while strengthening communities.
