Montgomery County’s Department of Permitting Services (DPS) will begin offering free residential deck maintenance inspections starting May 1 as part of Building Safety Month.
Homeowners can request an inspection by submitting an online service request through the DPS website at https://montgomerycountymd.gov/dps or by calling MC 311. The inspection, which typically takes less than 30 minutes, will evaluate the overall condition of the deck, including the support structure and ledger attachment. The program is limited to 300 appointments, and residents are encouraged to schedule early.
The initiative is intended to help homeowners better understand deck safety and maintenance needs. The County noted that free inspections are not available in the cities of Gaithersburg and Rockville, which operate their own permitting departments. Additional information, including a deck maintenance checklist, is available on the County’s 2026 Building Safety Month webpage.
