Fani-González Calls Comments About Delegate “Disgraceful and Shameful”

Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González issued a statement condemning remarks made by two Maryland House of Delegates members against Del. Chao Wu, who represents parts of Montgomery and Howard counties, after a video posted by Republican Delegates Mark Fisher and Brian Chisholm included derogatory comments directed at Wu.

In the 13-minute video posted on X, the delegates accused Wu, who was born in China, of being a “Chinese Communist Spy.”

Fani-González said the Council stands in solidarity with Wu and the Asian American community, calling the comments “disgraceful and shameful” and emphasizing that political disagreements should not involve hate or ethnic bigotry. The statement also highlighted the challenges historically faced by Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to opposing hate and celebrating diversity during AANHPI Heritage Month.
