Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s Montgomery Village chapter is raising awareness about child bedlessness in Montgomery County while encouraging families in need to apply for free beds for children ages 3 to 17.
The nonprofit, which launched locally in 2023, provides hand-built twin beds complete with a new mattress, bedding, and pillow to children who do not have a safe or comfortable place to sleep. The organization serves families across Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville, Derwood, Aspen Hill, and Damascus.
According to the organization, many children in the community are still sleeping on floors, couches, or in shared or otherwise unsafe sleeping arrangements. Since the chapter’s launch, volunteers have built and delivered 464 beds to local children. Applications for beds can be submitted by parents or guardians, as well as by teachers, counselors, social workers, and other community referral partners. The organization said applications are reviewed individually based on urgency and need.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace operates as a volunteer-driven and community-funded nonprofit. Volunteers participate in build days where bed frames are cut, sanded, assembled, and stained before delivery teams bring completed beds directly to families. The Montgomery Village chapter reports support from approximately 1,300 volunteers who have contributed nearly 2,500 volunteer hours since 2023. The organization is also encouraging residents to volunteer, donate, or help spread awareness about available
