As the busy summer travel season begins, Maryland transportation and law enforcement officials are reminding drivers to prioritize safety during the “100 Deadliest Days” between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when traffic fatalities traditionally increase.
Maryland State Police and local law enforcement agencies will conduct increased enforcement efforts throughout the summer, including DUI patrols and traffic safety initiatives. Officials said troopers have already removed more than 2,000 suspected impaired drivers from Maryland roads this year and have cited hundreds of motorists for excessive speeding.
Over the past five years, nearly 800 people have been killed and almost 15,000 injured in crashes involving impaired drivers in Maryland. Officials said speeding, distracted driving, and aggressive driving continue to be major contributors to serious and fatal crashes, and are urging motorists to buckle up, obey speed limits, eliminate distractions, plan for a sober ride, and use extra caution around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and work zones.
