Montgomery County Installing New Safety Upgrades on Bel Pre Road and Montgomery Village Avenue

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is adding new pedestrian and traffic safety improvements along sections of Bel Pre Road in Silver Spring and Montgomery Village Avenue in Gaithersburg, with work expected to be completed by this fall.

The projects include new traffic signals, pedestrian hybrid beacons, upgraded crosswalks, reduced lane widths, pedestrian islands, and curb bump-outs aimed at slowing traffic and improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Along Bel Pre Road near Argyle Middle School, MCDOT has installed a new traffic signal at Rippling Brook Drive and plans additional improvements including median barriers, high-visibility crosswalks, and pedestrian head-start signals. On Montgomery Village Avenue, the County is upgrading crossings, adding accessibility improvements, and installing new traffic signals and pedestrian beacons near bus stops and park entrances. County officials said the projects target high-injury corridors, which account for more than 40% of the County’s serious and fatal crashes despite making up only 3% of roadways.
