As technology advances faster than ever, cybersecurity and defense companies are competing for more than talent—they are seeking exceptional innovators with the expertise to create the next generation of products, services, and breakthrough technologies.
That combination of diverse and specialized talent, and proximity to customers is what positions Montgomery County, Maryland, as a strategic destination and a growing hub for defense, satellite communications, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing companies.
Thales Defense & Security, Inc.’s (TDSI) expansion is the latest example.
For more than six decades, TDSI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Thales U.S.A, has supported critical national security missions, delivering advanced communications, intelligence, surveillance, and defense technologies to military and government customers around the world.
Last week, the company celebrated a significant expansion of its manufacturing operations in Clarksburg, Maryland.
Over the past year, TDSI also doubled its manufacturing floor footprint through a $4 million investment, expanding production capacity to support the company’s continued growth.
Today, TDSI employs approximately 675 people in Montgomery County, including roughly 250 manufacturing employees.
As demand for its technologies continues to grow, the company continues to expand and has added more than 225 positions locally over the past three years.
A leading U.S. supplier of tactical radio and SATCOM communications, including EW/SIGINT kits, tactical power, Helmet Mounted Cueing Systems (HMCS), mounted/dismounted EO/IR sensors, missile fusing, cyber protection technology and Anti-Submarine Warfare sonars, TDSI supports customers across the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Department of Homeland Security, other federal agencies, and global security partners.
Between its two Montgomery County locations— in Clarksburg and Germantown—the company now operates approximately 237,000 square feet of production, testing, assembly, machining, repair, warehousing, and logistics space.
While this latest expansion further strengthens Montgomery County’s position as a leading defense and cybersecurity hub, the benefits reach far beyond TDSI’s operations. With more than $65 million in annual spending with suppliers across Maryland, the company helps fuel a broader ecosystem of manufacturers, technology firms, and service providers, generating economic impact throughout the region.
“Those numbers matter because they show the direct connection between workforce growth, regional investment, and national security readiness,” said Mike Sheehan, President & CEO of TDSI. “The technologies developed, produced, integrated and supported here in Clarksburg serve missions across all the joint forces.”
For defense and aerospace companies, access to professionals across engineering, computer sciences, data analytics, and cybersecurity is often the deciding factor when choosing where to grow. With 33 percent of its adult residents (aged 25 and older) holding an advanced degree, Montgomery County, Maryland, offers one of the highest educated talent pools in the nation. In fact, the state of Maryland also ranks 2nd in the highest concentration of PhDs in the country after Massachusetts.
The County is also home to Montgomery College, the state’s #1 community college, and the Universities at Shady Grove, a consortium of 9 public institutions on one single campus.
As Montgomery County’s defense industry continues to evolve and attract leading global companies such as Lockheed Martin and AeroVironment, organizations developing next-generation communications systems, cybersecurity solutions, intelligence platforms, and other advanced technologies will likely increasingly look to the County as a strategic location for growth, talent, and innovation.
