Will Jawando Leads County Executive Primary as Glass Concedes and Friedson Says “Path Is Difficult”

Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass has conceded in the Democratic primary for Montgomery County Executive, while Councilmember Andrew Friedson said he will continue to monitor the remaining ballot count despite acknowledging the path to victory is “undeniably difficult.”

As of Thursday, Will Jawando led the Democratic primary with 36,517 votes (40.84%), followed by Friedson with 29,968 votes (33.51%) and Glass with 19,291 votes (21.57%). Mithun Banerjee received 2,169 votes and Peter James received 1,478 votes. In the Republican primary, Esther Wells led with 5,240 votes (60.38%), while Shelly Skolnick received 3,439 votes (39.62%).

In a statement, Glass said he had been monitoring the election results and, “as a former CNN journalist, I know when the hill is too steep to climb.” He thanked volunteers, donors and supporters, saying the campaign’s work on housing affordability, education and protecting vulnerable residents would continue beyond the election.

Friedson thanked his supporters and said his campaign would continue watching the remaining mail-in ballot count while ensuring “every vote is counted and every voice is heard.” He added that, although his campaign had been leading among mail-in ballots counted so far, “the math ahead of us is undeniably difficult,” and pledged to continue advocating for affordability and economic competitiveness regardless of the final outcome.
