New Blair Witch Film Set for 2027 Revives Montgomery County Horror Legacy

A new installment in the Blair Witch franchise is officially on the way, with Lionsgate announcing that a reimagined Blair Witch film will be released in theaters on Sept. 24, 2027.

The upcoming film is being produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster and will be directed by filmmaker Dylan Clark, whose YouTube horror short Portrait of God gained widespread attention online. Two of the original stars of The Blair Witch Project, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, have also joined the project as executive producers.

The announcement has renewed interest in The Blair Witch Project, the groundbreaking 1999 horror film that was largely shot in Montgomery County. Although the film was set in the fictional Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville in Frederick County, most of the filming took place in the woods of Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg, with additional scenes shot in Wheaton. The movie was co-written, directed and edited by Eduardo Sánchez, a graduate of Wheaton High School and Montgomery College, who has said the legend was partly inspired by the mysterious atmosphere of Long Branch Creek near his childhood home.

Released in July 1999, The Blair Witch Project became one of the most successful independent films of all time, grossing more than $250 million worldwide and helping popularize the found-footage horror genre. More than 25 years later, Montgomery County remains an important part of the franchise’s history, with fans continuing to visit filming locations at Seneca Creek State Park.
