Montgomery College has received approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to offer a new Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in accounting, creating a career-focused pathway for students seeking to enter the accounting profession.
The 60-credit program, which will begin in fall 2026, was developed by Montgomery College accounting faculty and is designed to prepare students for immediate employment in accounting and finance-related fields. The curriculum includes coursework in corporate, government and nonprofit accounting, as well as business analytics, accounting information systems, data analysis, cybersecurity awareness and financial technologies.
According to Montgomery College, the new degree comes as employers continue to face a shortage of accounting professionals. Labor market projections cited by the college indicate that Maryland is expected to add more than 2,400 accounting and auditing openings annually. Graduates of the program will be prepared for entry-level positions such as accounting clerk, bookkeeper, payroll technician, tax preparer, and accounts payable or accounts receivable specialist.
The program will also create a pathway for students currently enrolled in Montgomery College’s accounting certificate program and is expected to expand into early college and dual enrollment opportunities for Montgomery County high school students within its first year.
