Germantown and Kensington have earned spots on PetSmart’s annual list of the nation’s top cat-loving cities, making Montgomery County one of only a handful of places with multiple communities recognized.
Based on cat adoptions through PetSmart Charities and spending on cat toys, treats, furniture and other products, Germantown ranked No. 18 nationally while Kensington came in at No. 23. Germantown is a newcomer to this year’s rankings, while Kensington also secured a place among the top 25.
PetSmart said the rankings highlight growing interest in cat ownership, particularly in suburban and mid-sized communities. The list is based on adoption data and customer purchases between June 2025 and June 2026, with results adjusted for the number of PetSmart stores in each city. PetSmart’s National Adoption Week will take place July 20-26, during the height of “kitten season,” when shelters typically see an influx of kittens and cats in need of homes.
