Heavy Police Presence After Officer-Involved Shooting in Gaithersburg

An adult male is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday evening near Montgomery Village Plaza in Gaithersburg after police responded to a report of an armed individual.

According to Montgomery County Police, at approximately 6:47pm on Sunday, July 12, Montgomery County Police 6th District officers and Gaithersburg City Police officers responded to the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road for a report of a man loading a handgun at a bus stop in front of Montgomery Village Plaza.

Police said officers located the man and attempted to peacefully resolve the situation using deescalation techniques. Officers also worked to clear the shopping plaza’s crowded parking lot while interacting with the individual. During the encounter, police say the man took actions that caused officers to discharge their service weapons.

Officers immediately provided medical aid until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a handgun was recovered. No officers or bystanders were injured.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. In accordance with Maryland law, the investigation has been turned over to the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, which is responsible for investigating fatal officer-involved shootings in the state.

The shooting comes 24 hours after officers responded to a stabbing at the Lakeforest Transit Center.
