Montgomery County Public Schools will conduct a comprehensive review of student screen time and digital device use in elementary and middle schools after the Montgomery County Board of Education approved a resolution directing the audit.
The review will examine how much time K–8 students spend on school-issued devices during the school day, distinguishing between instructional and non-instructional use. It will also identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary screen time, evaluate the effectiveness of content filters that prevent access to inappropriate material, and recommend age-appropriate guidance for student device use.
The Board’s resolution cites research linking excessive screen time to eye strain, reduced attention spans, sleep disturbances, mental health concerns, and lower cognitive performance in children. It also notes that technology remains an essential part of modern education, particularly for digital curriculum and remote learning, but says its use should be balanced with traditional instructional methods.
MCPS has been directed to present its findings to the Board by March 2027. The report will also outline the anticipated costs, benefits, and operational impacts of any proposed changes to the district’s approach to student screen time and digital learning.
