Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will sign legislation Monday updating the County’s firearms law to comply with a Maryland Supreme Court ruling while maintaining many of the local gun restrictions still permitted under state law.
The bill signing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on July 27 at the Montgomery County Executive Office Building in Rockville.
Bill 23-26E, approved by the Montgomery County Council on July 21, preserves the County’s prohibition on carrying firearms near many sensitive public places, including schools, parks, libraries, polling places and houses of worship. The legislation also removes or modifies provisions the Maryland Supreme Court determined must be regulated exclusively by the state.
Among the changes, the bill repeals the County’s previous restriction on the purchase, sale, transfer or transport of ghost guns, including 3D-printed firearms, in the presence of minors, after the court ruled that authority belongs to the State of Maryland. Councilmember Dawn Luedtke, representatives from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the Montgomery County Board of Education and the Montgomery County Police Department are expected to attend the bill signing.
