The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has released body-worn camera footage from the fatal police-involved shooting involving Montgomery County Police and Gaithersburg Police that occurred on July 12 in Gaithersburg.
The man who died was previously identified as 46-year-old Elliott Powers of Rockville.
According to police, officers from both departments responded at approximately 6:45 p.m. to a bus stop in the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road for a report of an armed man. Officers encountered Powers holding what appeared to be a handgun and spoke with him for several minutes while attempting to de-escalate the situation.
Police previously said Powers racked the slide of the handgun and later raised it in the direction of an officer. Officers from both agencies then fired, striking Powers. Officers provided medical aid, but Powers was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered nearby, and no officers or bystanders were injured.
The involved Montgomery County Police officers were previously identified as Michael Wengloski, Andrew Hanko and Robert Bullock. The Gaithersburg Police officers were identified as Noah Whelan, Carissa Fortin and Sgt. Christopher Leach.
