The City of Rockville will partner with Montgomery County to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and remember the 11 Montgomery County residents who lost their lives.
A remembrance ceremony will be held at 9am on Friday, September 11, at Courthouse Square Park, located at the corner of East Jefferson Street and Maryland Avenue in downtown Rockville. The ceremony is free and open to the public and will include a presentation of colors and remarks from city and county leaders.
The 9/11 memorial at Courthouse Square Park honors Montgomery County residents William E. Caswell, Dr. Gerald P. Fisher, Capt. Lawrence D. Getzfred, Michele M. Heidenberger, Angela M. Houtz, Teddington H. Moy, Lt. Darin H. Pontell, Scott A. Powell, Todd H. Reuben, Patricia J. Statz and Ernest M. Willcher.
Designed by artists Gene and Susan Flores and commissioned by the Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Council, the memorial features 11 benches, with one dedicated to each victim and an inscription reflecting that person’s character.
The memorial also includes a plaque bearing the victims’ names. It was designed with the help of astronomers so that each September 11, the morning sun briefly illuminates each name.
