Family-Owned Ethiopian Restaurant Named One of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia’s Best Cheap Eats

Beteseb Restaurant, the Ethiopian restaurant at 8201 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, has been named one of “The Best Cheap Eats Around the DC Area” by Washingtonian.

The recently published list highlights 60 restaurants where diners can get what Washingtonian describes as a satisfying meal for less than $25 per person, excluding drinks, tax and tip. More than 200 restaurants throughout the region were considered for the list.

Washingtonian highlighted Beteseb’s crispy beef tibs, made with lean steak, onion, tomato, peppers, rosemary and clarified butter and served sizzling on a cast-iron skillet. The publication also praised the restaurant’s vegetable dishes, including its lentils and collard greens, and called Beteseb a strong choice among the region’s many Ethiopian restaurants.

Beteseb is a family-owned restaurant specializing in traditional Ethiopian cuisine. Its menu includes Special Derek Tibs, made with chunks of lean beef sautéed with onion, tomato, green pepper and clarified butter, as well as Special Kitfo and a variety of vegetarian dishes, including Ye’shiro Wot and Beyaynetu.

Meals are served with injera, with imported gluten-free teff injera also available. The restaurant also offers Ethiopian wine and beer, along with a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
