Rockville is now home to what the city says is the first U.S. installation of a residential electric vehicle charging cable channel in a public right of way, providing a new charging option for residents who rely on street parking.
The system allows an EV charging cable to run from equipment on private property through a narrow, covered channel installed across the sidewalk. The cover sits flush with the sidewalk to maintain access for pedestrians and people using mobility devices.
The new standards are intended for residents of single-family homes, townhomes and duplexes along city streets who do not have access to a garage, driveway or parking pad. They follow the adoption of Rockville’s Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan in March 2025.
Rockville is also allowing curbside pedestal chargers in the public right of way, connected to a home’s electrical service through underground conduit. Proposed installations must meet city safety, accessibility, parking and infrastructure requirements, and homeowners are responsible for installing and maintaining the equipment.
