San Pancho, the Cal-Mex burrito restaurant at 7056 Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park, has been named one of “The Best Cheap Eats Around the DC Area” by Washingtonian.
The recently published list highlights 60 restaurants where diners can get what Washingtonian describes as a satisfying meal for less than $25 per person, excluding drinks, tax and tip. More than 200 restaurants throughout the region were considered for the list.
Washingtonian highlighted San Pancho’s Mission-style super burritos, made with Sonoran flour tortillas, along with the restaurant’s flavorful salsas. The publication also praised its cocktails and creative coffee drinks, noting that San Pancho has become popular with Takoma Park residents since opening in 2024.
San Pancho opened in July 2024 and was created by husband-and-wife team Carolina McCandless and David Perez, who also own nearby Cielo Rojo. The couple met in 2012 while working at a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District, where they developed an appreciation for the neighborhood’s distinctive style of burritos.
Inspired by those experiences, the couple opened San Pancho with the tagline “Born in La Mission.” The restaurant uses traditional Sonoran-style flour tortillas imported from Mexico, locally sourced hormone-free meats and scratch-made ingredients in an effort to bring a taste of San Francisco’s Mission District to Takoma Park.
