Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old man who allegedly fled the scene of a crash and fell approximately 50 feet from an Interstate 495 overpass Sunday evening.
Shortly after 7 p.m., troopers from the Rockville Barrack were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on the outer loop of I-495 past Georgia Avenue. While responding, police received reports of a shirtless person wearing gray pants running along the northbound shoulder toward Connecticut Avenue.
According to the preliminary investigation, the 18-year-old was driving a blue Ford Fusion when it struck an unattended blue Chevrolet pickup truck being towed by a white tow truck. No injuries were reported in the crash. Witnesses told police the driver exited the Fusion and fled on foot along the shoulder.
A responding trooper located the driver, who then jumped over a railing and fell approximately 50 feet onto Stoney Brook Drive, according to police. The trooper immediately went to the man and attempted lifesaving measures. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The man’s identity has not been released. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The investigation remains ongoing.
