Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada has resigned, effective Friday, September 18, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police. County Executive Marc Elrich accepted Yamada’s resignation.
Assistant Chief Darren Francke will serve as acting chief of police while the County searches for a permanent replacement. MCPD said the department will continue its day-to-day operations during the leadership transition and remain focused on serving Montgomery County.
“We also remain committed to transparency, accountability and maintaining the public’s trust as we move forward,” the department said in a statement Friday.
Yamada had served as Montgomery County’s police chief since 2024.
County Executive Marc Elrich issued the following, “Today, I accepted the resignation of the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) Chief Marc Yamada. We thank him for nearly four decades of service to MCPD and our residents. This resignation is effective immediately, and I have selected Assistant Chief Darren Francke to serve as Acting Chief of Police until a permanent Chief is appointed.”
