Toys“R”Us has announced a major U.S. expansion that will bring 120 new standalone stores across the country during the 2026 holiday season.
The expansion, being carried out in partnership with Go! Retail Group, will bring the company’s total number of standalone U.S. stores to 160 by the holiday season. Toys“R”Us currently has 40 standalone locations in addition to shops inside Macy’s stores nationwide.
The expansion follows a significant return to Maryland last year. Toys“R”Us opened a 7,000-square-foot flagship store at Arundel Mills in Hanover in November 2025, while a temporary Toys“R”Us Holiday Shop opened at The Mall in Columbia. The brand also operates smaller shops inside Macy’s stores, including locations at Westfield Montgomery and Westfield Wheaton.
Maryland also has an important place in the history of Toys“R”Us. Washington, D.C. native Charles P. Lazarus started the business that eventually became Toys“R”Us in 1948, initially selling baby furniture through a store called Children’s Bargain Town. After expanding into toys, Lazarus opened the first Toys“R”Us store in Rockville in 1957.
That Rockville store helped launch what would become one of the world’s most recognizable toy retailers. Nearly 70 years after the brand’s first Toys“R”Us opened in Montgomery County, the company is again expanding its standalone presence nationwide.
Specific locations for the 120 new stores have not yet been announced. The new stores will feature toys, collectibles and gifts from brands and franchises including LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Pokémon and KPop Demon Hunters. Select locations will also include Creator Studios for influencers, creators and toy brands, as well as candy shops and cafés.
