Governor Wes Moore joined the Maryland Department of Human Services and Maryland Department of Health in notifying residents about new federal work requirements affecting SNAP and Medicaid eligibility.
Under H.R. 1, up to 80,000 additional Maryland SNAP recipients may be required to document at least 80 hours per month of work, volunteering or approved training to maintain benefits. The expanded SNAP requirements took effect November 1, 2025.
Maryland is sending information about the changes to SNAP households and conducting outreach to Medicaid members. Up to 320,000 Medicaid members could be affected by new requirements beginning in January 2027, although exemptions apply to certain individuals.
State officials are encouraging residents to review notices about their benefits and determine whether the requirements or an exemption apply to them.
