Governor Wes Moore announced a new artificial intelligence framework focused on the development, use and regulation of AI in Maryland, with an emphasis on protecting residents, workers and children.
The framework is centered around three principles: protecting Marylanders from emerging AI-related threats, giving workers a voice in how the technology affects their jobs, and protecting children from exploitation and harm.
Among the proposals, the administration plans to develop regulations for frontier AI companies, establish protections involving the use of a person’s likeness, address discriminatory housing algorithms and algorithmic rent coordination, and expand protections for workers affected by AI.
The framework also calls for stronger protections involving AI chatbots and children, restrictions on addictive AI-driven social media features for users under 16, and safeguards governing AI tools used by students in schools.
The framework builds on AI-related policies and legislation previously adopted in Maryland involving deepfakes, AI impersonation, online safety and schools.
