A Montgomery County Council committee will review a $390,000 supplemental appropriation Thursday aimed at addressing youth vaping and nicotine addiction.
The Council’s Health and Human Services Committee will consider the funding for the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) during its September 24 meeting at 9:30 a.m.
The funding comes from a settlement resulting from a lawsuit filed by Montgomery County and the State of Maryland against electronic cigarette manufacturers and distributors over allegations that addictive products were aggressively marketed to minors.
The proposed funding includes $250,000 for RecMode Fitness & Boxing’s Beyond the Gloves project, $100,000 for Street Outreach Network programming and $40,000 for an administrative specialist supporting the Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Grants Program.
Beyond the Gloves will focus on vaping and tobacco prevention and intervention among Black and Latino youth. The Street Outreach Network plans to use its funding to purchase two passenger vans to help high-risk youth access substance use prevention, mental health and other programming.
The HHS Committee is chaired by Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles and also includes Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Dawn Luedtke.
