WSSC Water is urging customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties to use water only for essential purposes immediately after a power issue disrupted operations at its Potomac Water Filtration Plant.
In its 8:45 a.m. update Tuesday, September 29, the utility said the water was safe to use and there was no need to boil it.
The Potomac plant supplies drinking water to approximately 75 percent of WSSC Water customers. WSSC Water said it is working with Pepco to restore power and that conservation could help preserve water for fire protection and system storage while avoiding a boil water advisory.
Until further notice, customers are urged to take shorter showers, turn off faucets promptly, avoid outdoor water use, limit toilet flushing, and limit use of washing machines and dishwashers.
WSSC Water said its other filtration plant, Patuxent, remains operational but cannot produce enough water on its own to meet average customer demand. The utility said it will provide updates as the situation develops.
