A Montgomery County Council committee is scheduled to review legislation Monday that would prohibit participation in unlawful street racing and street takeovers on public highways and roadways.
The Council’s Public Safety Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 5, to review Bill 27-26, which was introduced in June. The legislation would define terms related to unlawful racing and street takeovers and establish penalties for violations.
The proposal follows recent instances of racing, speed contests and exhibition driving, as well as legislation approved by the Maryland General Assembly that increased penalties for participating in racing or speed contests and prohibited exhibition driving under certain circumstances.
Bill 27-26 would create a Montgomery County law prohibiting unlawful speed contests, exhibition driving, stunt driving and race contests.
The legislation is sponsored by Councilmember Andrew Friedson, with Council Vice President Marilyn Balcombe and Councilmembers Sidney Katz and Dawn Luedtke serving as cosponsors.
