Rockville Police to Hold Prescription Drug Take Back Event

The Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) will again offer a free and anonymous way to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and pet prescriptions on Saturday, October 24.

According to RCPD, police will accept unused and expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rockville City Police Station at 2 W. Montgomery Ave. Officers will be outside to provide drive-up and drop-off access, allowing participants to dispose of medications without leaving their vehicles.

Only pills and patches will be accepted. Liquids, needles, sharps, syringes, illicit drugs, glass containers and pressurized aerosols, including inhalers, will not be accepted. Medications can be brought in their original containers or pills can be combined in a clear, sealed plastic bag. All collected medications will be safely destroyed.

The collection is being held as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which provides a safe way to dispose of unused medications while helping prevent prescription drugs from being misused, stolen or improperly discarded.

During the most recent collection in April, 4,306 law enforcement agencies nationwide collected 642,410 pounds, or more than 321 tons, of unwanted prescription drugs. Maryland collections accounted for 12,511 pounds. Since the program began, more than 10,500 tons have been collected during 30 national collection events, including 298,785 pounds in Maryland.

Rockville also has a prescription drug drop box available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in the front lobby of the city police station. The drop box accepts pills and patches only.
