Nominations Open for Montgomery County’s Unsung Sports Hero Award

The Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee is accepting nominations for its third annual Unsung Sports Hero Award, recognizing individuals and organizations that have helped expand access to sports in the county.

The award focuses particularly on contributions that have increased sports participation among underserved communities. Nominees can include athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, parents, donors, groundskeepers, organizations and others whose work has helped make sports more accessible.

“Every successful athlete has a team of people behind them who give their time, encouragement, and support, often without asking for recognition,” County Executive Marc Elrich said.

Nominations will be accepted through Saturday, October 31.

Award recipients will be selected by the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee and honored during the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Celebration on Sunday, February 28, 2027, at the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza.

Last year’s Unsung Sports Hero honorees were Sarah Albus, founder of Open Door Sports; HAYA: Hoop As You Are, founded by Mary Figueroa and Amani Echols; and Eric Moreno, soccer program manager at Impact Silver Spring.
