For decades, The Golden Bull was a popular steakhouse destination in Gaithersburg and Adelphi, known for its prime rib, steaks, generous portions, and traditional dining atmosphere. The restaurants were also recognizable for the large golden bull statues mounted on their rooftops, which became familiar landmarks for passing drivers.
The restaurant first opened in the 1960s, with locations along Frederick Avenue (Route 355) in Gaithersburg and Riggs Road in Adelphi. Both became longtime favorites for family dinners, celebrations, and special occasions throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
During the 1970s and 1980s, The Golden Bull was among the area’s best-known steakhouses. A 1984 Washington Post review described the Adelphi location as a “solidly impressive beef house,” highlighting its prime rib, large portions, and traditional steakhouse décor, including imitation Tudor beams, gold accents, and plush booths.
The Gaithersburg restaurant was a fixture along Route 355 for decades, operating long before the arrival of many of the city’s modern shopping and dining destinations, including Rio and Kentlands.
The Adelphi location closed in 1997 while the Gaithersburg location eventually closed in 2017, and the building was later demolished to make way for redevelopment. The property is now home to Mega Mart, a Latin supermarket that opened in 2023.
