Montgomery County Fair Warns Proposed MCPS Calendar Could Threaten Annual Event

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair is urging residents to weigh in on Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) proposed 2027-2028 school calendar, warning that an early start to the school year could negatively affect the annual event.

According to fair organizers, the earlier school start date in 2026 created challenges involving student participation, volunteer availability, attendance and revenue. Organizers are concerned that a similar calendar next year could further affect the fair’s operations.

The fair is encouraging residents to support Version 3 of the proposed 2027-2028 school calendar, which organizers believe would better accommodate the event and allow students and school employees to participate.

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair is a nonprofit organization operated by volunteers and does not receive taxpayer funding. According to organizers, more than 1,000 volunteers contribute over 28,000 hours annually, while students earn thousands of Student Service Learning (SSL) hours through their participation.

The fair also provides opportunities for 4-H exhibitors to showcase animals, crafts, baking and other projects.

Organizers are asking residents to submit feedback through the MCPS calendar survey by November 6. The fair is encouraging respondents to select Version 3, which it says would help preserve student involvement, volunteer support and attendance.

The proposed school calendar has not yet been finalized.
