Rock band Sponge reported that several guitars and other equipment were stolen while the group was staying at a hotel in College Park, following a performance at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Tuesday night.
The band announced the theft on social media Wednesday, October 21, saying several instruments were missing and that members were still determining the full extent of the loss.
“It happened again, we got robbed!!!” the band wrote. “They got guitars and a bit more.”
Among the instruments reported stolen were several Reverend guitars, including a vintage orange Reverend Commando, a black Reverend Pete Anderson Eastsider S and an avocado-colored Reverend Warhawk. The band also reported the theft of a black Fender Jaguar bass, a black Fender Precision bass and a black Fender Stratocaster.
The band said police had not yet arrived when the announcement was posted and asked the public to share information about the stolen equipment. Additional details are expected as the band determines what else may be missing.
Formed in Detroit, Michigan, Sponge rose to prominence in the 1990s with alternative rock hits including “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain),” both of which reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart. The band’s 1994 debut album, Rotting Piñata, achieved platinum status, and the group later found additional success with songs including “Wax Ecstatic” and “Have You Seen Mary?”
Sponge performed alongside Candlebox at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Tuesday, October 20.
We’ve reached out to Montgomery County Police and will provide an update if addition information becomes available.
