The City of Rockville is reminding residents that pumpkins and food scraps can be composted for free at four drop-off locations throughout the city.
Undecorated pumpkins are accepted through Rockville’s Food Scraps Drop-Off program, provided that candles, lights, plastic decorations and other non-compostable materials are removed. Large pumpkins should be cut into smaller pieces before being placed in collection bins. Pumpkins decorated with paint or glitter must be disposed of in the trash.
The program also accepts fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy products, cooked meat, eggshells, coffee grounds and certain food-soiled paper products.
Rockville offers four free drop-off locations, all accessible 24 hours a day:
- Maintenance Facility: 14625 Rothgeb Drive
- Rockville Senior Center: 1150 Carnation Drive
- Twinbrook Community Recreation Center: 12920 Twinbrook Parkway
- Potomac Woods Park: 1380 Stratton Drive
Collected food scraps are transported to the Prince George’s County Organics Composting Facility for processing.
Additional information, including a complete list of accepted materials, is available on the city’s Food Scraps Compost Drop-Off webpage.
