Officials Urge Drivers to Exercise Caution Following End of Daylight Saving Time

Montgomery County and regional officials gathered at Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring on Thursday, November 5, to highlight increased traffic safety risks associated with the end of daylight saving time and earlier sunsets.

According to preliminary data, nearly 180 traffic fatalities occurred across the Washington metropolitan region during the first seven months of 2026, compared to an average of approximately 192 during the same period from 2023 through 2025.

The event was part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Street Smart campaign, which promotes pedestrian, bicycle and driver safety throughout the region.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted the county’s planned $171 million investment in safer infrastructure for Fiscal Year 2027, including sidewalks and safer crossings.

Montgomery County Police conducted a crosswalk safety enforcement demonstration, while crash survivors and victims’ families shared their experiences. Officials encouraged drivers to slow down and remain alert, particularly during evening commuting hours when reduced visibility increases risks.
