Montgomery County State Park Among Six Public Land Projects Highlighted by Maryland DNR

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced Thursday, November 5, that it has made progress on six new or expanded public land projects across the state, including a new state park in Montgomery County.

According to DNR Secretary Josh Kurtz, the projects are part of an effort to expand Maryland’s state park system, preserve historic sites and increase public access to outdoor recreation.

Among the additions is Freedman’s State Park in Montgomery County, which honors Enoch George Howard and his family, who purchased their freedom from slavery and established a Black community in the area.

Other projects include Wetipquin Creek State Park, the first in Wicomico County, and Savage Highlands State Park in western Maryland, which offers cabins, yurts and camping opportunities.

DNR also expanded Cunningham Falls State Park in Frederick County to include a historic African American cemetery, acquired property to improve access to Wills Mountain State Park and announced plans to expand public access at Holly Beach Farm near Annapolis.

The projects are supported through existing funding sources, including Program Open Space and the Great Maryland Outdoors Act. Additional park openings and improvements are expected in 2027.
