Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is facing a system-wide network outage affecting Wi-Fi, public computers, and other services due to an underground fire in Baltimore that damaged fiber optic cables, although all branches remain open for material checkouts.

Per MCPL: “Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) and several other Maryland library systems are experiencing a system-wide network outage due to an underground fire in Baltimore this past weekend. MCPL’s Wi-Fi, public computers, printing, scanning and copying services are unavailable until further notice. The outage may last for several days as repairs are underway.

All MCPL branches remain open, and library users can check out materials.

The fire damaged the fiber optic cable network used by library systems around Maryland, leading to widespread electrical disruptions and the loss of internet services.
