Body-Worn Camera Footage from Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Released

On Monday, the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General released the body-worn camera footage from the fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred September 21, 2024, in Wheaton. 

According to the Office of the Attorney General, “On September 21, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers with the Montgomery County Police Department responded to the 3400 block of Janet Road in Wheaton after receiving a 911 call for a report of an assault in progress. Upon arriving on scene, officers encountered an adultman in a yard holding an object in his right hand. Police shouted commands at the man to “drop the knife;” however, the man did not comply and began crossing the street. One officer discharged his service weapon, striking the man. Officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid and called for EMS. The man was pronounced dead on scene. A grill fork was recovered near the man’s body. No officers were injured.”

The decedent was identified as 31-year-old Melvin Omar ChavezPaz.
