The Novel Refuge is proud to announce the opening of its nonprofit used bookstore. Located at 11200 Scaggsville Rd. #127 in Laurel, this volunteer-run bookstore provides vital support for refugee resettlement services our area.
Every purchase helps fund critical programs that assist refugees in their journey toward a new life in Maryland.
“We believe in the transformative power of books and the importance of welcoming those who have been displaced,” said Kathy Bittinger, Executive Director. “We also believe that where you shop matters. Our bookstore is more than just a place to buy high-quality used books. Purchasing from our store keeps money in our local community and provides crucial support for refugees seeking to rebuild their lives here. All profits currently support the International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring. We plan to add more local partners in 2025.”
The store features a diverse selection of gently used and some new books, including both fiction and non-fiction for all ages, as well as an assortment of puzzles and games. There are also plans to host events, including author readings, book clubs, and workshops, fostering a love for reading and a sense of community among customers.
“We invite everyone to come out and support this important cause,” added Bittinger. “Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors – many whom have faced unimaginable challenges – while keeping quality books in circulation and out of landfills.”
