Bethesda Artist Jackie Hoysted Launches New Digital Art Exhibit in NoMa
This holiday season, DC’s NoMa neighborhood is swapping traditional holiday decorations for a striking new public art installation that is sure to brighten the neighborhood.
Created by Bethesda-based artist Jackie Hoysted, STUPENDOUS: The Uline Ice Arena, is a dynamic new digital light projection displayed in the K Street Virtual Gallery, located in the railway underpass between First and Second Streets NE.
Hoysted’s newest work STUPENDOUS celebrates the entertainment legacy of the historic Uline Arena, an adaptive reuse preservation project where REI’s flagship DC store in now located. Hoysted uses vivid, stylized depictions of rodeos, circuses, concerts, synchronized swimming, and more to reimagine the variety of activities once held in the iconic Uline venue. During its heyday, Uline Arena attracted major performers, including the Beatles who played their first US concert tour here in 1964.
Hoysted’s interest in working in this space was inspired by her Irish roots and time working for Amtrak. The neighborhood surrounding Uline Arena was once home to Irish immigrants, and the K Street Virtual Gallery sits beneath the Amtrak rail lines.
💬 “Through these moving images, I hope to bring a smile and a sense of wonder to those passing through the underpass, celebrating a history that remains as vibrant as ever in spirit,” says Hoysted.
Don’t miss this dazzling display of history, art, and imagination. The K Street Virtual Gallery is open daily from 6am to midnight. Admission is free.
