Firefighters and paramedics from Laytonsville and Sandy Spring visited 5-year-old Gibson Rivera Theimer on May 22 as he continues to recover in the hospital from a severe lawn mower accident.
According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Pete Piringer, Gibson is doing well and was able to spend time with the first responders between surgeries. The accident occurred on Saturday, May 10, in Olney, and his father has since shared that Gibson’s injuries are more extensive than initially reported, affecting his entire right leg from upper buttock to foot. Over $57,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign to support his recovery.
GoFundMe: May 18th, 2025, Update from Gibson’s father, Richard:
A lot has happened since the last update on Wednesday night, and I want to share where things stand now.
On Thursday around 1 PM, Gibson was taken to the Operating Room for another procedure. The doctors performed a thorough cleaning and inspection of his wound. The good news: there were no signs of infection.
Friday was a big day for Gibson. He participated in his therapies and, with the help of his physical therapist, got out of bed for the first time since the accident. He practiced sitting and standing several times on his uninjured leg, and he also had 15 minutes of therapy focusing on his injured leg — which he does have some ability to move.Late Friday night into early Saturday morning, Gibson was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to a regular care room. His medications have been adjusted — he’s still dealing with some vomiting and itching, but new medications are helping manage those symptoms, and he’s feeling more comfortable now.His dietary restrictions have been lifted, so he’s been able to enjoy some of his usual favorite foods again.
Saturday morning, therapy continued with training on how to get in and out of a wheelchair. He even made a trip to the hospital playroom, where we played catch with a spiky ball, played several rounds of Connect 4, and he practiced a melody on a music keyboard that he’s been learning.
He had many visitors on Saturday and received an overwhelming cartload of gifts from our neighbors. Opening them brought him so much joy — his face lit up with excitement, and his room now looks like a toy store.
This morning is Sunday, and Gibson is looking forward to visitors from his preschool.About Gibson
Beyond the updates on his recovery, I want to tell you a little bit about who Gibson is — because he’s so much more than what’s happened to him.Gibson is naturally very social and has a bright, inquisitive nature. He wants to get to know everyone he meets — sometimes a little too nosey for his own good! He’s endlessly curious and full of questions.
One of his favorite interests is geography. He’s memorized where every country is on the world map and knows more geography trivia than most adults I know. He can sit for ages studying maps and quizzing himself just for fun.
But perhaps his biggest passion is rocks and minerals. He’s always on the lookout for interesting stones, examining them closely and trying to identify and classify them. He knows about fluorescent minerals and has been asking to test his collected samples under a UV light — I just haven’t quite learned enough about how to help him with that yet. He’s already surpassed my own knowledge on the subject, and I often find myself turning to him for answers. He also has a natural interest in numbers. He loves watching videos like Numberblocks and seems to have an intuitive grasp of which numbers can form squares, cubes, rectangles, and step patterns. It’s amazing to watch him explore those patterns with such excitement.
Lately, he’s been learning simple melodies on the piano. Sometimes, completely unprompted, he’ll break into little original compositions — experimenting, creating, just for the joy of it.
Gibson was also in the early stages of distance running training with members of the Montgomery County Road Runners Club. He had already built up the ability to run 5K courses at an even pace without stopping. I’m hopeful that, with the right prosthetic, he’ll be able to continue that training — because he truly enjoyed it.
Gibson is a joyful, curious, and imaginative soul. And even as he recovers from something unimaginably difficult, those core parts of him are still shining through.
