Parents Could Face Charges as Juvenile E-Bike Accidents Increase

According to Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) 2nd District Commander Amy Daum, there has been a concerning rise in juveniles riding electric mini dirt bikes in urban areas, particularly at night, leading to multiple collisions and safety risks.

He urged parents to discuss safe e-bike use with their children, noting that Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16, and parents can face charges under Maryland law for allowing underage or unsafe operation.

Daum posted the following on Twitter/X on Friday morning:

“We are seeing an alarming increase in juveniles riding electric mini motorized dirt bikes in our urban areas especially at night. This is dangerous for both children and the community. We have experienced multiple collisions involving these e-bikes… And I encourage parents to have a conversation with their kids about safe operation. As a reminder, class 3 Ebike operators must be 16. Check out this resource: wwwthecyclistchoice.com. Parents can be charged under MD Traffic Article, 21-1201a or b for authorizing or knowingly permitting a minor in violation.”
