Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded around 4 p.m. Friday, August 29, to a single-family house fire in the 8500 block of Churchill Downs Road in Laytonsville.
Investigators determined the fire was accidental, originating in or near a recycling bin by the garage before spreading rapidly to the attic. Approximately 70 personnel responded to the scene. The home was located in a non-hydrant area.
Damage is estimated at about $1 million, including $850,000 to the structure and $150,000 to contents. Five adult residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
