Following the Board of Education’s decision to delay action for more community engagement, Councilmember Evan Glass issued a statement expressing ongoing concerns about the proposed closure of Silver Spring International Middle School and relocation of Sligo Creek Elementary School.
He emphasized the need for transparency, additional data, and meaningful collaboration with residents before any final decisions are made.
Over the past two months, I’ve listened to hundreds of my neighbors about the proposed closure of Silver Spring International Middle School (SSIMS) and relocation of Sligo Creek Elementary School (SCES). I remain deeply concerned about how this proposal will impact students and families.
I appreciate that the Board of Education voted this evening to allow more time for meaningful community engagement.
For years, construction at SSIMS/SCES has dragged on while residents felt unheard and overlooked as key decisions were made. Those concerns were only heightened when a $40 million gymnasium replacement moved forward without addressing the school community’s core needs.
I have been steadfast in expressing my concerns about SSIMS/SCES and the broader need for more transparency in the CIP process. Tonight’s actions give MCPS the chance to complete the boundary study, evaluate additional data and alternative options, and begin the essential work of rebuilding trust by genuinely partnering with Silver Spring residents to determine the best path forward.
Decisions for the community should always be made with the community.
