Pepco announced a $1.5 million expansion of its Customer Relief Fund in partnership with the Salvation Army to support eligible customers in the District and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, bringing the company’s total direct energy affordability assistance to $6.5 million over the past year with additional funding from parent company Exelon.
Eligible limited- and moderate-income residential customers with qualifying balances can apply for up to $300 in assistance, with applications now open in Maryland and reopening in the District in early February.
Per the news release distributed on Tuesday, January 12: “Pepco today announced the expansion of its Customer Relief Fund in collaboration with the Salvation Army, providing an additional $1.5 million to support customers in need throughout the District and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland. The additional contribution from Pepco’s parent company Exelon brings Pepco’s direct customer assistance efforts to address energy affordability to $6.5 million in the past year. Pepco does not control or profit from increasing energy supply costs, a key driver of increased costs on customer bills.
Eligible limited- and moderate-income customers can apply for up to $300 in relief from energy cost challenges driven by colder weather and higher energy supply costs. Applications are available in Maryland today and the fund will re-open for customers in the District in early February. Eligible customers include active residential customers with a balance of at least $250 on energy bills and a household that meets certain income guidelines.
“We know rising energy supply costs are putting real strain on families, especially during these cold winter months,” said Tyler Anthony, President and CEO of Pepco Holdings. “Our goal is to be a steady source of support that our customers can count on, not just in moments of need, but as part of a long-term commitment to affordability and reliability. Since launching the Pepco Customer Relief Fund last year, thousands of District of Columbia and Maryland residents have received assistance, and with this expanded contribution, we’re helping even more customers manage today’s challenges while continuing work toward a future where energy remains reliable and accessible for all.”
“Community organizations are often the first place people turn when costs rise and resources are stretched,” said Major Wilma Mason, Area Commander at The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command. “This additional funding comes at a critical time during the colder winter months when so many families are facing additional hardships. The addition to the Customer Relief Fund allows us to continue serving residents in the District and Maryland, supporting those in need, and strengthening our community when it matters most. We’re honored to partner with Pepco on this vital initiative and to help bring hope and relief to our neighbors.”
How the Customer Relief Fund Works
Pepco is providing an additional $1.5 million in funding to the Salvation Army, which will administer funds to eligible customers across the District and Maryland.
Fund details — including eligible organizations, funding amounts, application timelines, and selection criteria — are designed to reflect unique community needs and priorities. Applications are open for Maryland customers and the fund for District customers, which was previously exhausted, will re-open in early February.
The expanded Customer Relief Fund complements Pepco’s existing year-round efforts to support customers and communities, including customer bill assistance programs, energy efficiency initiatives, and tools that help customers manage energy use and costs.
