Giant Celebrates 90 Years

Giant Food will mark its 90th anniversary on Friday, February 6, reflecting on its history since opening its first store in Washington, D.C. in 1936.

Headquartered in Landover, Giant operates more than 160 supermarkets across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. The company employs about 20,000 associates and supports community initiatives focused on food insecurity, military families, pediatric cancer research, and social equity through its Giant Family Foundation.

As part of its anniversary recognition, Giant announced a $300,000 donation to the Maryland Food Bank to support the organization’s School Pantry Program. The program provides free, market-style food distributions at more than 170 schools statewide, helping families access fresh and healthy foods. Giant has supported the initiative since 2011, and during fiscal year 2024–25, the program distributed more than 2.5 million pounds of food, equal to about 2.1 million meals. The check presentation is scheduled for February 6 at the Maryland Food Bank’s Baltimore facility.
