Anthony G. Brown joined a coalition of 21 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief supporting a legal challenge to regulations issued during the Trump administration that expanded religious and moral exemptions to the contraceptive coverage requirement under the Affordable Care Act.
The coalition is urging the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit to uphold a district court ruling that found the regulations unlawful, arguing they allow employers to deny workers guaranteed no-cost coverage for birth control and related contraceptive care.
In the brief, the attorneys general argue the regulations could threaten contraceptive coverage for hundreds of thousands of women and shift millions of dollars in healthcare costs to individuals and state-funded programs. The coalition also contends that limiting access to contraceptive care could worsen existing racial, gender, and income disparities in healthcare, particularly for people living in areas with limited access to reproductive health services.
